Sfela PDO

Sfela is a local semi-hard white brine cheese, recognized since 1996 as a Designation of Origin (PDO). It is a spicy and salty cheese, for which the raw material as well as its preparation must be in Messinia or Laconia exclusively.

It is prepared from fresh, whole, pasteurized (unpasteurized, if it is day-old milk) goat’s and sheep’s milk with high acidity, with Sfela’s preparation recipe going back to ancient times. The cheese stays for about 1 month at room temperature before being transferred to rooms with a temperature of 4-6°C until it is at least 3 months old. This gives it enough time to mature while maintaining its shape and intense flavor.

It is available in packages of 500 grams.
